I have been
working with infrared photography for over twenty years, devoting myself
exclusively to this medium. We often think of photography as an art
about light and about the surfaces that are made visible by light. But
what fascinates me about infrared photography is that it captures a
kind of light that we cannot see directly. In this way it also reveals
to In my architectural studies, for example, I think the infrared film allows me to capture the hidden life of buildings, a life that isn't just in the stone. Similarly, in my still-life studies of sculpture, the infrared light reveals an almost organic depth beneath the surface of the stone. When I work with landscapes, my medium allows me to get beyond the particular scene that moves me and to reveal a whole "innerscape" of connections that aren't simply visible in nature. I think these connections reflect a kind of spiritual reality found in the world all around us. Each photograph is an original print, taken from 35mm infrared negatives, scanned and printed on a high quality inkjet printer using 100% cotton rag paper and four shades of archival, carbon-pigment inks. The result is an image which has the tonal range and archival characteristics of a gelatin-silver print while,at the same time, having the rich, velvety surface quality of a platinum print. I hope my photographs will serve as an invitation to look beneath the surface of things and discover a level of meaning that goes beyond the realm of light and what is visible. |
